6. Refraction And Distortion

This drawing of still life objects on a table show a good sense of depth as you can clearly tell which objects are in front, alongside and above others. The light source of this drawing appears to be coming from the right side which is creating very strong form shadows and cast shadows, as well as highlights on the objects.
The different levels of shading show the reflectivity and texture of the different objects, this is visible by the strong chiaroscuro effect created by the ball at the upper left of the drawing which is highly reflective and shiny. The ball at the bottom right of the image on the other hand has very soft and gentle highlights which and gives the object a rugged appearance showing that it is very dull.
The composition of the objects is very sparse but the shadows and the drapery help to hold the drawing together and balanced. The drapery also helps to lead the eye around the image with the help of shading and highlights.
The vantage point of this drawing is well planned as there is an almost balanced amount of highlights as there are shadows, also the drawing has no orphaned objects or ambiguous edges or lines this also shows that it was thoroughly planned on the page before hand.

5. Man-made Forms: Vehicles

This drawing of a vehicle has very good perspective, this drawing was thoroughly planned out and this has really helped with getting the shape of the car correct, it also gives a good sense of foreshortening which is visible on the side of the car. The focal point of this drawing is at the front of the car as it has the most amounts of detail as well as the highest and lowest tonal values which effectively grab the attention of the viewer.
The use of marker pens has really worked in getting the shading and the level of detail to clearly distinguish the different tonal values of each part of the car. A chiaroscuro effect is visible at the front end of the car where the extremely dark tonal values meet the extremely light values. It is also visible on the windows of the car, this is because of the windows being reflective but also because of them being transparent which means that you can see the inside of the car which is very dark.

An improvement for this drawing would be to add the shadow of the car on the floor so that the major light source can be clearly distinguished, as there seems to be lighting from different directions, this would really improve on the impact of the drawing.

4. Skies And Seas

This drawing of the sky shows good perspective as it has a visible implied line that slowly flows across and down the page, this impressionistic technique used through the shading of the clouds in the sky works very well in getting the viewer’s eye to look at the focal points and other points of interest. The shading at the bottom of the page of the horizon line adds depth to the drawing and shows that the sky is above.
The main focal point of this image is towards the bottom right just above the horizon line, this part of the drawing has darker shading than the rest of the sky, also the difference in brightness in this area draws the viewer’s attention, an area of interest would be in the bottom left corner where a building comes up past the horizon line, another area of interest would be at the top left of the image which seems to have different layers of clouds close by one another.
The shading technique used for the sky and clouds could be improved upon by smudging the crayons used more, so that the lines created by them are no longer visible, this would give a better effect and add more realism to the drawing, another improvement would be to try n add both light and dark to the clouds so that you are able to clearly distinguish which clouds are which, judging by this drawing it seems that there wasn’t enough light from the sun to get a good sense of tonal value.

3. Urban Landscapes

This urban Landscape drawing shows very good perspective as it was drawn from a good vantage point. The depth of this drawing is very good as you can clearly tell which buildings are in front of each other, also there is a lot of examples of foreshortening created by the orthogonal lines which move towards the vanishing points, the vanishing points are located far to the left and right of the page.
The main focal point of the drawing is the building to the left where the trees just appear behind it, this is because it is the most detailed building with both shading and windows as well as depth. The horizon line is roughly two thirds up the page.

2. Interior Architecture

This drawing of the Bradford Cathedral’s interior has a lot of detailed shading which really shows the depth of the drawing as you can clearly tell which objects are in front of which. The implied line travels from the bottom left of the drawing starting at the focal point which is a highly detailed window, it then moves up to the arch above it and travels along to the next arch until reaching the end and then moves up towards the windows and travelling to the left and then to the top of the image to the wooden beams that are supporting the roof.

The Focal point of this image is the highly detailed window and the areas of interest are the arches and windows. The perspective of the drawing is very good as the vantage point clearly places the drawing within the rule of thirds, also the orthogonal lines of the drawings are clearly shown through every object which aligns perfectly with the vanishing points, this shows that the drawing was planned very well. The drawing also has great examples of foreshortening on the arches and the windows.

There is a great implied line in the bottom left corner which is created through different values (brightness) this really shows a boundary between different the two different states (light and dark).
